Abstract

Since the beginning of the century, Kabylia, the main Berber-speaking region of Algeria, has developed an unofficial process of linguistic promotion and language planning. Stating first the very particular conditions of this dynamic movement (historical, social, and ideological), the article analyzes the main steps of the process, defining the main protagonists and social vectors, as well as the great trends, which all follow from the wish to modernize the language and to lessen the impact of the dominant Arabo-Islamic culture and ideology. This argument is based on the author's analysis of the work involved in language planning, particularly with regard to modernizing the lexicon and developing a written form of the language. As a conclusion, the author wonders whether the desire for linguistic autonomy is not symptomatic of a wish for political autonomy among Kabyles.
